Best Pool Cue Shaft Cleaners
The Q-Wiz is by far one of the most popular tools available for cleaning and burnishing your shaft. Its simple design and ease of use is what makes it so appealing to beginner and advanced players alike.
To use the Q-Wiz you simply take the unmarked (green) side and run it up and down the length of the shaft using long, light strokes. Once its cleaned to your liking, flip the pad over to the side that has the logo printed on it and repeat the process. This side is made to polish/burnish your cue, locking out moisture and ensuring your shaft remains smooth. The whole process can be done in 60 seconds or less.
The neat thing about the Q-Wiz is that its surfaces are abrasive enough to take out small imperfections in your shaft, but wont effect its diameter. It works by removing tiny amounts of surface area on your shaft, similar to sanding, thus reducing the amount of friction you feel between your shaft and your hand. And once you notice the Q-Wiz has built up an accumulation of chalk dust, dirt, or micro wood residue, you simply rinse it out under running water. Make sure you let it completely dry out before using again.
One of the best things about the Q-Wiz is that you can take it with you anywhere. Its small, and lightweight and can easily be stored in your pocket or case without even being noticed. The only downside to this is that its easy to lose, or leave behind at the pool hall accidentally. Fortunately though, the Q-Wiz is super budget friendly so replacing it is not an issue.
All in all, the Q-Wiz is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a quick way to clean and polish their shafts on the go without the use of wax or liquid products. This is by far the most convenient option available.
If your looking for an all-in-one product that not only cleans your shaft but also seals it, then the McDermott Silky Shaft Wax may be a good option for you. Unlike the Q-Wiz which removes very fine particles from the surface of the shaft, the McDermott Silky Shaft Wax works by removing any dirt, grime, oil, or chalk residue and then sealing the shaft with a protective barrier to help prevent any future buildup. Its a cleaner and sealer in one.
The best part about this product is that it also leaves your shaft, as the name implies, silky smooth. It literally feels like silk on wood. Its made from natural olive oil and beeswax which wont leave behind any buildup or residue. This also means that its super easy to apply. All you do is take a small amount of wax on your hand or clean cloth and apply it to the shaft. This single application cleans and seals your shaft to perfection.
Some users have reported only having to use this product every 3-4 weeks using only a tiny amount. This is a great all-in-one product to help keep your shafts in optimal playing condition. If you want a simple, one step process to restore the smoothness of your shaft for weeks at a time, I would definitely recommend the McDermott Silky Shaft Wax.
Another great product by McDermott, the McDermott Shaft Maintenance Kit is a kit that provides every product you need to restore and keep your shaft in perfect playing condition.
The kit includes:
- McMagic Burnishing Papers
- 1 Bottle of McDermott Renew Shaft Cleaner
- 1 Bottle of McDermott Ultra-Glide Shaft Conditioner
- 1 Leather Pad Shaft Conditioner
To use the kit, you start first with the McDermott shaft cleaner. Sprinkle a few drop onto a clean cloth and wipe down the entire shaft. Wipe off any residue with a clean cloth. This process removes any dirt, oil, or chalk dust from the shaft and ferrule.
Next you move onto the McMagic Burnishing Papers. You use these to remove any small imperfections in your shaft. You start with the coarser grits and work your way up to the finer grits. This works similar to the Q-Wiz but with a few more steps involved. These papers are washable so you can use them over and over again.
After you’ve finished up with the burnishing papers you can move onto the Ultra-Glide Shaft Conditioner. Similar to the cleaner, you apply a few drops to a clean cloth and buff the shaft for about 30 seconds. This seals the wood pores in the shaft and locks out moisture and oil. It also gives your shaft a super smooth feel which promotes a smooth stroke.
Alternatively, you could use the Leather Conditioning Pad for the same effect. Both the Ultra-Glide Shaft Conditioner and the Leather Conditioning Pad achieve the same effect. However the effect may last longer when use the Ultra-Glide Shaft Conditioner since it leaves behind a protective barrier on you shaft.
Keep in mind that you don’t have to go through all these steps every time you use this product. For instance, if your shaft is in great shape and you don’t notice any small dents or dings, then you’d be perfectly fine to skip the McMagic Burnishing Paper step and just use the two cleaning products instead.
All in all, the McDermott Shaft Maintenance Kit is a great tool for any pool player to have at their disposal.
